What Are Coffee Roasts?

Coffee Roasting is the process of heating the coffee cherry seeds to create aroma and flavor and increase solubility. Coffee is typically roasted in a commercial roaster that turns the beans like a clothes dryer. To learn more about the specific roasts, keep reading.

Light Roast

Light roast coffees have a light body and have more acidity than other roasts. However, these roasts retain more caffeine and are used in coffees like Breakfast Blends due to less roasting time. In addition to a light roast, this roast is also called a Cinnamon roast.

Medium Roast

Medium roast coffees are browner in color compared to the beans of a light roast and have a more balanced flavor, aroma, and acidity. These beans are also dry and can be referred to as an American roast due to their popularity in the U.S. Due to increased roasting; the coffee bean flavors can be more intense but with less caffeine.

Dark Roast

These coffees are dark brown and almost black, and unlike the other roasts, these beans can have tiny patches of oil. As a result, dark roasts have less caffeine than the others but have a smooth flavor. Dark roasts are also referred to as full-city or Espresso.

You begin drinking Italian and dark French roasts if you go beyond dark roast. These roasts are very shiny beans but have less acidity due to the increased roasting.

Coffee Flavors

If a cup of black coffee isn’t for you, have you tried adding flavoring? From everyday classics to holiday favorites and the obscure, everyone has a flavor. The most common and popular coffee flavors in the world include:

  • French Vanilla
  • Peppermint
  • Hazelnut
  • Pumpkin Spice
  • Mocha
  • Butterscotch
  • Caramel
