Driving through Wales – Check out the Most Scenic Routes in a Rental Car

Wales is known for having some of the UK’s most beautiful drives. A road trip to check out the coast and countryside is a great way to explore this beautiful place. You will undoubtedly find yourself pulling over on plenty of occasions to capture the breathtaking beauty of Wales. In fact, Wales is known to be the third best place for drivers in the UK.

If you are planning a road trip to check out the most scenic roads in Wales, the best way to do this is to approach one of the many car rental companies in Wales. You can compare car rental offers, and after a thorough car rental comparison, decided which car rental you want to go with. Picking a small and cheap car rental is the best option to go with to ensure you can get around with ease. You will find most car rental companies and the best deals at the airports. You can compare prices here: https://www.autoprio.com/en-united-kingdom-country-wales/ and find prices from companies such as Avis, Budget, InterRent, Thrifty, Arnold Clark, Hertz, Advantage, Green Motion, Flizzr, National, Dollar, Sixt, Goldcar, IOM, Alamo, Athol, Enterprise, Practical, Firefly, and Europcar.

Here are the best routes to drive through when you are in Wales.

A4069 Black Mountain Pass

This beautiful scenic road is often referred to as the Top Gear road by the locals ever since Jeremy Clarkson drove on the road for the show. The Black Mountain Pass is a popular route with bikers and motorists. This stunning drive can be combined with a visit to the Tywi Valley, which is the most picturesque spot on the route.

The route starts at the junction with the A474, north of Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, and passes through Lower Brynamman and Brynamman. The road also crosses over the Black Mountain range to emerge at Felindre near Llangadog. The route will take you to a height of 1617 feet above sea level.

There are many activities to try out in this area if you want to take a break from driving your car rental, the most popular one being canoeing.

Abergwesyn Pass

Another one of the most scenic drives in Wales is the Abergwesyn Pass, which takes you from Tregaron to Llanwrtyd Wells. This road is well-known for the wild and colorful landscape you pass through – taking you through dense pine forests, moorlands, streams, and cliffs. The drive also has a series of hairpins with a cool name – the ‘Devil’s Staircase.’ Due to the hairpin bends and hilly terrain, the road is not designed for driving at high speeds. There is a 20 miles speed limit set on this route, so it may take longer to complete the drive. However, the time spent is well worth a look at the beautiful landscape all around.

There aren’t many petrol stations on this route, so it is recommended that you fill-up the tank of your cheap car rental before you set off.

Snowdonia

With a dreamy name like Snowdonia, it is easy to guess that Snowdonia is a must-visit if you are on a road trip through Wales. This road is home to Wales’ first national park and offers you a glimpse of the unspoiled landscape and majestic mountains. This is not a very long road trip and takes around an hour and 30 minutes to complete the drive.

The route starts at Porthmadog on the coast of North Wales. You can take a break from driving your rent-a-car to check out the quirky Italian-style villa of Portmeirion.
