Water, the word that means life for some and death for most of the people of the world. The reason I said water means death to most people of the world is, it causes different kinds of deadly diseases. And the WHO says around 80% of the diseases are waterborne. The 3.1% death of the world happens because of poor drinking water. Anyone can assume how lethal can water become if it is not pure. However, we can prevent waterborne diseases by taking essential measures. Where almost 70% of the water sources are polluted how we can do that? The answer is by using a high-quality water filter.

Here in this article, I am going to discuss the most common waterborne diseases and the ways we can prevent them.

Typhoid Fever

Salmonella typhi bacteria is the reason behind typhoid fever. It is one of the most common waterborne diseases. However, it is not common in the developed countries. Most in South Asian and African countries see this fever. It can cause other serious health issues like hair fall, disabilities, etc. Drinking contaminated water, eating food washed by unhygienic water, being close to the infected person may cause Typhoid.

Some of the symptoms are:

  1. Ups and downs in fever temperature.
  2. Headache
  3. Weakness and fatigue
  4. Muscle aches
  5. Sweating
  6. Dry cough
  7. Weight loss and loss of appetite
  8. Stomach pain


The bacteria Vibrio cholerae, found in contaminated water causes cholera. The infection results in an enormous secretion of water from the body. As a result, the infected person gets weaker day by day. It causes rapid weight loss, fluid loss. Contaminated water supply causes cholera. It can spread faster if the infected person uses an unhygienic toilet. The bacteria are normally found in well water, seafood, raw fruits and vegetable, grains, etc. The symptoms are:

  • Low blood sugar
  • Low potassium levels
  • Kidney failure

Hepatitis A

One of the most contagious liver infections is caused by the deadly virus called hepatitis A virus. It has several types. It directly attacks the liver and affects its functions. The major reason for hepatitis A is contaminated water. Having close contact with the infected individuals. Some symptoms are:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Sudden nausea
  3. Vomiting
  4. Abdominal pain
  5. Clay-colored bowel movements
  6. Loss of appetite
  7. Low-grade fever
  8. Dark urine
  9. Joint pain
  10. Skin becomes yellow and eyes become white and pale.
  11. Intense itching


Another waterborne disease that occurs because of contaminated water. Besides drinking water, this disease also causes by swimming pool water, the town’s water supply, etc.

Symptoms are:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Extreme Weight loss


When someone has severe diarrhea with blood because of an intestinal infection that is called dysentery. Sometimes, there is mucus in the stool. Though dysentery does not last for long, however, it can cause life-threatening situations for you if you do not take steps.

The symptoms are:

abdominal cramps

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • fever of 100.4°F
  • dehydration

Dysentery happens as a result of a lack of hygiene. For example, when someone who is dysentery infected does not wash hands after coming back from the toilet, things they touch are at risk.


There is saying prevention is better than cure. These are some of the common waterborne diseases that we can stay safe from if we take the necessary steps beforehand. Maintaining a healthy and hygienic lifestyle is the best way we can do that. The water we drink should be germ and bacteria-free. To make it happen you can either heat the water so that it becomes pure. Though effective this traditional system takes time and a lot of effort. So, the best prevention is to use high-quality water filters.
