It seems like Apple is on a mission to one-up Meta in the mixed reality competition as it’s working on iris-scanning technology for the tech giant’s forthcoming XR device.

As per a report in
The Information, the upcoming XR device by Apple will come packed with sensors that work like Face ID in iPhones and iPads.

As per the report, the ‘Iris ID’ will help users log in to their accounts and even make payments biometrically.

The Apple headset will reportedly have over 10 cameras, the report said, adding that the XR device might come with the same M2 chip as the one powering the Cupertino-based giant’s MacBook Air. Apple’s upcoming XR headset has been highly-anticipated for years. As per reports, the device is expected to be released globally sometime in 2023.

However, the device won’t come cheap, especially when Apple is the brand behind it. Several rumours suggest that it will cost between $2,000-$3,000, which is almost twice the price of Meta’s Quest Pro, the most premium version of the tech company’s VR headset line-up to date.

Meta unveiled its high-end VR headset, the Quest Pro, at Meta Connect 2022 earlier this week. The Quest Pro, which is selling for $1,500, is marketed towards businesses as a solution to hybrid work and virtual collaboration.

The Meta Quest Pro features a number of new features that are meant to improve users’ perception of truly being in the presence of other people. The headset makes it possible to view not only virtual worlds but also the real environment of the user, thanks to high-resolution outward-facing cameras.

However, the Quest Pro doesn’t offer the iris-scanning technology that Apple popularized with its own devices.
