Old Lady Sprint Record: Grandma, at 105, sprints to new record in 100 metre race. Her secret to health? ‘Curd and milk’

Age is just a number! And a 105-year-old grandmother has just proven it by setting a new record in 100 metre sprint.

The grand old lady finished the race in 45.40 seconds at the inaugural National Open Masters Athletics Championships on Sunday, beating previously record set by Man Kaur, Indian track-and-field athlete who had finished the 100 metre sprint in 74 seconds at the age of 101 and bagged gold at World Masters.

The race was held by the Athletics Federation of India, which concluded on Sunday, in Vadodara. The 105-year-old Rambai ran alone in Vadodara as there was no one else competing above the age of 85 at the race.

Rambai won a golden sprint double – the 100 metre on June 15 and 200 metre on Sunday in 1 minute, 52.17 seconds.

“It’s a great feeling and I want to race again,” the 105-year-old told the
Times of India in an interview. After setting a new record in 100 metre sprint for her age group, Rambai is not eyeing international tournaments and is planning to apply for a passport.

Asked why she didn’t compete when she was younger, the grand old lady laughed and said she was ready to run but nobody gave her an opportunity.

The centurion first competed in November last year when her granddaughter, Sharmila Sangwan, took her to Varanasi.

“Then she participated in events in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala. So far, she has won more than a dozen medals. She is a natural,” Sangwan told
TOI.

Born on January 1, 1917, Rambi used to run in the fields of her Kadma village, around 150km from Delhi, in Charkhi Dadri district. Only recently she started wearing running shoes and tracksuits.

So what’s Rambi’s secret mantra? “I eat
churma, curd and milk,” she says.

The 105-year-old’s granddaughter informs that the sprinter is a pure vegetarian and particular about having 250 grams of ghee every day and 500 grams of curd.

“She also drinks 500ml of pure milk twice a day. She likes
bajre ki roti (flat bread made of millet). She doesn’t eat much rice,” Sangwan added.

She further informed that the centurion works a lot in the fields and runs 3-4km on a normal day.
