Reliance Jio will aim to launch a 5G phone priced under Rs 12,000 once its 5G coverage has reached a good threshold, according to a Counterpoint Research report.

The report says Jio will wait for its 5G network to proliferate, to target the broader base of mass market 4G smartphone users with its 5G smartphone.

“Further, at some point in 2024, Jio will also be compelled to launch an affordable 5G mmWave + sub-6GHz smartphone as the cost deltas between the two have narrowed significantly from the overall BoM (bill of materials) fitting perspective,” the report said.

Reliance Jio has leveraged its partnership with Qualcomm along with placing bulk orders with Samsung and with the supply chain in China and Korea to bring the cost of the Jio Phone Next below $60, the report states, according to the report.

The display and storage individually accounts for 22% of the bill of materials. The displays are supplied by TXD, a new Chinese supplier while the storage and memory are supplied by Samsung.

The camera modules on the Jio Phone Next are made by SK Hynix, a Korean supplier while the battery is made by Guangdong Fenghua NEW Energy CO., LTD, a Chinese supplier. Both components individually account for 9% of the BoM cost.

The processor in the Jio Phone Next is supplied by Qualcomm along with the sensor and modem which accounts for 11% of the BoM cost.
