Cyber security and network engineers among most sought after job profiles in telecom in 2023

Networking engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and cloud computing experts are expected to be the most sought after profiles by the telecom sector commanding a 10-12% premium in terms of pay packages, staffing firm NLB Services said Tuesday.

The demand is driven by the continued rollout of 5G service across the country. The other profiles expected to see rise in demand are user experience designers and data science professionals.

In the last year, there has been a 15-20% rise in demand for technology talent in the telecom and allied sectors, and the trend is expected to create a new record 25-30% in the coming year. Compared to 2021, demand for specialised telecom technology talent grew by almost 20% in 2022.

Telcos Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel began the phased launch of their 5G services in October last year, and currently cover nearly 50 towns. Jio aims to complete its rollout by 2023 end, while Airtel has said it will cover 5000 major towns and cities by March 2024. Vodafone Idea is yet to announce its 5G plans.

The demand is not restricted to the telecom sector, even non-telecom sectors like healthcare, retail, manufacturing, and auto are expected to hire tech talent to scale up their service capabilities around 5G. Data Scientists, and Cybersecurity professionals are some of the key profiles in non-telecom sectors.

Sachin Alug, chief executive, NLB Services added, “We are seeing a higher demand for candidates in the mid-level category (with 4-8 years of experience). There are a lot of emerging opportunities in Video content, Network Upgradation & Migration, Private 5G for Enterprises, IoT/IIoT, Mobility, Network Infrastructure and Network Security.”

AI professionals can earn anywhere between Rs 5 lakh a year to Rs 1 crore depending on their experience. The average salaries of user interface and experience designers can be as high as Rs 15 lakh a year, while cybersecurity specialists can draw up to Rs 20 lakh a year, NLB Services added.
